After being awarded a contract from the Figure 8 Island Homeowners' Assocation, Cottrell Contracting's Dredge Lexington was called upon to rebuild the beach. Figure 8 Island is located fifteen miles north of Wilmington, NC. Recent hurricanes and nor'easters had eroded the beach to the point where many beachfront homes were in danger of being destroyed. The 2.8mm USD project called for ~500,000 cubic yards of sand to be dredged from borrow sites as far as 3 miles away. Phase One of the project called for the dredging of ~250,000 cubic yards from Rich Inlet with the sand pumped on the north end of the island. Phase Two of the project called for ~250,000 cubic yards to be dredged from Banks Channel and Mason Creek with deposit of material on the south end of the island. Work to protect the north end of the Island started on the 2nd of December and was finished just before Christmas. Work to protect the south end of the island began on the 1st of Feburary 2006 and was completed by the 31st of March.
